Profiled Projects:
This recent surge of heat hasn't slowed our guys down at all! These past few months, Douglass Colony Group completed some truly exceptional projects including St. Mary's Hospital, The Denver Botanic Gardens, Solaris, and the Joint Forces Readiness Center.
St. Mary's Hospital (Grand Junction):
« General Contractor: FCI/McCarthy, Grand Junction, CO
« Architect: Perkius & Will, Minneapolis, MN
Starting in January 2008 and finishing January of this year, Douglass Colony Group's involvement in the St. Mary's addition was quite extensive. Douglass Colony installed over 100,000 sqft of single ply membrane roofing that included a fully adhered PVC and EPDM. Douglass Colony also installed plaza paver decks with hot fluid-applied waterproofing and over 100,000 sqft of custom-made metal wall panels.
The size of the St. Mary addition was quite incredible. In nearly two years, nine additional stories were constructed above the existing 5 stories. During the entire process, the hospital remained open and fully-operational, which was no easy feat to say the least! Each phase of the process proved to be quite a challenge in terms of coordinating among the different trades (i.e. windows, glazers, masons, etc...), maintaining a watertight seal at all times, retaining hospital access points for patients, and working under difficult conditions that required custom engineered staging.
The project is certified as LEED Gold.

The Denver Botanic Gardens
« General Contractor: GH Phipps, Greenwood Village, CO
« Architect: Tryba Architects, Denver, CO
May of this year, Douglass Colony Group completed a hot-applied reinforced waterproofing system for the Mordecai Children's Garden at The Denver Botanic Gardens that is set to open to the public at the end of this summer. Douglass Colony Group installed the 20,000 square feet of waterproofing and Garden Roofing components including the pre-engineered Intensive soil blend. The system components include:
• American Hydrotech Monolithic Membrane 6125 hot-applied reinforced waterproofing
system
• Intensive Garden Roof Assembly including a Total System Warranty
The system incorporates Vector Mapping Leak Detection, an advanced waterproofing technology designed by International Leak Detection.
The gardens attract thousands of families each year with its incredible plant displays and lifelong learning and environmental preservation practices. The Mordecai Children's Garden looks to become the premiere children's garden in the Rocky Mountain West. Designed with the kids in mind, the garden features all of the ecosystems found in Colorado that kids can explore with all of their five senses. From lookout points to picking their own fruits and vegetables, kids will never be complacent at this fun-filled garden!
Solaris (Vail):
« General Contractor: The Weitz Company, Denver, CO
« Architect: Davis Partnership, Denver, CO
Finishing up in April, The Solaris project encompassed many of Douglass Colony Group's capabilities including, zinc standing seam metal roofing, zinc shingle roofing, EPDM roofing(90 mil fully-adhered), and a terrace plaza deck waterproofing system (215 mil fabric reinforced). Douglass Colony Group installed over 55,000 sqft of zinc standing seam metal roofing and zinc shingle roofing, including the insulation substrate assembly.
Douglass Colony Group overcame many hurdles in completing this large-scale project on time including limited access, delayed construction schedule, and adverse weather conditions. The site access was extremely limiting forcing our crews to use on-site roll forming for the standing seam panels. The panels were formed inside the building and then walked to the exterior of the building where they were loaded into custom fabricated panel crates and lifted by crane to the rooftop. The overall construction schedule fell behind early resulting in a delayed start time for our scope of work. The weather also played a large role in the project whereas special heating equipment had to be used in order to bend the zinc properly. Although many challenges were encountered, all were overcome to complete the project on time.

Joint Forces Readiness Center (Cheyenne, WY):
« General Contractor: FCI Contractors, Grand Junction, CO
« Architect: Coover-Clark & Associates, Inc., Denver, CO
Finishing up just this month, the Joint Forces Readiness Center included work from multiple Douglass Colony divisions. The scope of work included 17,300 sqft of our DCG 2300 rainscreen system using Reynobond Vancouver copper composite metal panel material. We also supplied and installed the insulation and zee girt supports behind the composite panels. In addition, we supplied and installed all the sheet metal and roofing for the project.
As with any large-scale project, many challenges were faced during the course of the job. Overcoming the weather proved to be difficult at times with the notorious Cheyenne wind gusts, rain, mud, and overall wet conditions. Truckloads of supplies had to wait untouched for a few days at some points until the conditions tapered off.
The radiused panels also provided some challenging details that were overcome by our inhouse design team.
Various concave and convex conditions with 2" wide reveal joints give this project a unique look and feel. Tight coordination with the window installation company provided clean leans and joint continuity. Our troops will truly have a top-notch facility to utilize!

Budgeting for Roof Repairs
We all know that regular maintenance on your car can prevent accidents resulting from mechanical failures, increase the overall life and performance of your car, and save you from larger costly repairs down the road. So, reluctantly, when that oil light pops on or our brakes start squealing, we are reminded that our car needs regular maintenance and pretty much immediate attention to avoid costly repairs down the road. After all, our cars are hugely important to us so we can go to and from work on a daily basis and earn those paychecks!
The nice feature about cars is that indicators are given when repairs, maintenance or other work needs to be done. Your roof is not as easy to read. Unless there is a leak or worse yet, a collapse, we believe we are protected and no maintenance is required. Just as a car requires regular maintenance, so does your roof. The qualified service technicians at Douglass Colony Group can perform the following services to ensure your roof stays in proper working order:
• Inspect the entire roofing system including flashings, drains or gutters, etc.
• Document the inspection with digital photos
• Remove all debris, clean gutters and drains
• Provide cost estimates for roof repairs and roof replacements (if necessary)
• Suggest preventative maintenance measures to extend functional life of roof
As Authorized Installers and Approved Applicators, we will ensure all work is completed within manufacturer specifications and without voiding your existing roof warranties. Douglass Colony Group maintains the largest commercial roof service department in Colorado with crews at four locations statewide and services performed 24-7, regardless of size or location. Whether it's a simple inspection or the problem has escalated to the need for immediate repairs, give us a call to determine the best, most affordable action you can do to take care of your roof. We can help you extend the life of your roof, recommend actions to avoid costly repairs down the road, and help prevent dangerous, unhealthy conditions that may result from an unmaintained roof. It's always cheaper to fix a leak before it occurs! Budgeting for regular maintenance and small repairs is always the more affordable option. Upgrade to Solar, but Don't Forget to Upgrade Your Roof Also!
As more and more solar applications are being placed on rooftops, it's important to take into account the roofing system sitting under your solar system. Each manufacturer continues to update their guidelines to include a variety of sheets, supports, and membrane attachment methods to ensure the best results for your solar system. If you're installing solar or even thinking about installing solar, call us first. Not only can we install your solar system, we can help your roof last as long as your solar system.
