Snow Removal: Is your roof ready for the strain of additional snow weight this winter?
We've all seen the recent nationwide news of heavy snowfalls leading to roof cave-ins. With the heavy snows and harsh winter conditions Colorado has experienced this winter, it is important that building owners not just be concerned with clearing snow from their sidewalks and parking lots, but their roofs as well!
When a significant snowfall occurs, it's vital that building owners continually maintain their roof system and evaluate it for signs of distress. Some signs of danger may include:
- Sagging Steel
- Splitting wood frame/supports
- Sprinkler heads forced down below ceiling tiles
- Doors/Windows popping open or difficult to open
- Curving or bowing utility popes or electrical conduit near the ceiling
- Creaking or popping noises

Flat roofs are more at risk due to the freeze-thaw cycle and the associated draining issues. It is also important to keep in mind that the depth of the snow may be quite deceiving as this doesn't always indicate the weight of the snow. A foot of dry snow can weigh about 3-5 pounds per square foot whereas a foot of wet snow can weigh nearly 20-25 pounds. Heavy rain following recent snowfalls can be just as dangerous as its freezes overnight and adds to the overall weight-load on the roof.
Regular snow removal and routine roof checks will help to keep your roof healthy and clientele safe. Snow removal is a dangerous process and should be left to the professionals. There is a science to snow removal whereas crews will remove snow from the weakest part of the roof (the farthest point from the supports) and use correct equipment that will not damage the roof.
If you would like to remove some snow burden from your roof or need a roof inspection to determine its health, please give us a call today!

Act Now: Xcel Rebates Dropping Fast!

Xcel Energy has been a huge advocate of the green movement by offering rebates and other incentives to make solar applications more affordable. As of 10/31/2009, the Xcel Solar Rewards Program has paid over $104 million in incentives to customers and installed more than 38 MW of solar and 4,300 solar PV systems in Colorado. (www.xcelenergy.com) However, no great offer can last forever! Xcel Renewable Energy Credit (REC) rebate amounts continue to decrease at an alarming rate as the price paid out per kW is roughly half the amount paid out last month (From 11.5 cents/kW to 6.5 cents/kW). If you are considering a solar application for your building, it's important to act now before this rebate offer expires all together. Safety in Numbers: Fact or Fiction?
While most are familiar with the age-old adage of safety in numbers, most are unaware of how this can apply to roofing. The construction industry is consistently identified by OSHA as one of the most dangerous fields in the marketplace today. Roofing, in particular, is considered very dangerous and often unpredictable work due to the alarming heights, hazardous chemicals, dangerous tools and exposure to treacherous weather conditions.
The numbers game is one way of identifying a good company. What is their EMR? How are their OSHA numbers and accident ratios recorded? How do their insurance rates compare? Most importantly, what do you as a building owner or general contractor look for in a contractor when it comes to safety? Your choice will have a definite impact on your bottom line if you are paying for unnecessary costs associated with unsafe work practices. At Douglass Colony Group we have spent over a million dollars on the best safety equipment and education for our workforce on the most current and progressive safety training available today. The chart below is a reflection of all our efforts and how they impact our ability to do work. So whether you are looking for a partner in that next big job or simply looking for ways to maintain your current roofing system, consider DCGI where we take safety seriously and our record says it all.
A Quick Note of Thanks
The first Quarterly Truss Seminar series proved to be a terrific success! Thank you to all who attended and expressed such interest and enthusiasm in our truss products and services. Keep an eye out for future truss seminars to come.
Client Testimonial
Douglass Colony was on our construction team for both the EPDM roof, standing-seam metal roof, and metal wall panels when we built a large specialty building for a major government contractor. Douglass Colony eagerly met the extremely rigorous installation and warranty requirements of a demanding owner who needed absolute assurance the billions of dollars worth of equipment inside wouldn't see a drop of water. Additionally, Douglass Colony skillfully crafted a particularly challenging angled design feature with precision field breaks. I won't hesitate to have them look at any of our projects in the future.
