Ameristar Casino
Douglass Colony Group embarked on quite a challenging project when they started work on this mountain-based casino. Installing both a TPO roofing system and a standing seam steep slope roof (12:12 pitch), Douglass Colony Group overcame many hurdles in order to complete this project.
The mountain conditions certainly posed challenges as the strong, and often unpredictable, wind gusts and snow storms made for interesting and challenging work conditions. Safety precautions were heightened as field workers performed job duties thirty-five stories in the air. All sheet metal workers executed job duties off a platform scaffolding system or in man baskets hanging off cranes all while dangling high in the sky. No easy task to say the least! Not to mention that the casino remained open and fully operational during the entire year-and-a-half construction process. Temporary roofing was planned and executed for each floor as it was built so interior finishes could be started before the roofing system was installed. This resulted in considerable design build and flexibility to get all project components completed according to plan and schedule. All in all, Hensel Phelps and Douglass Colony Group jointly pulled off a tremendous success and completed an incredible new building! Now Ameristar Casino visitors can “let it ride” in a beautiful new building tucked away in the mountains.
RTD District Shops
Installing an inverted roofing system may sound like a “strange” task, but the RTD District Shops renovation shows that “strange” can turn out to be quite incredible. Douglass Colony Group removed and replaced over 220,000 sqft (2,200 squares) of T. Clear IRMA inverted roofing system. We first began with the removal of the existing roofing system and insulated pavers. Then the true challenges really began- - timing and coordination. Douglass Colony Group installed a new single layer of 1”polyisocyanurate insulation and air barrier followed by the new IRMA roof system consisting of a Firestone EDPM roof membrane, and T. Clear insulated paver system. Included in the scope of work was all new architectural sheet metal. All installation phases were timed and executed properly so the RTD shops could stay fully operational during the entire construction process. Efforts were also made to recycle products and materials whenever possible. With funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Douglass Colony Group is pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to complete this inverted roof system for the RTD District Shops.Denver Justice Detention Center and Courthouse
Douglass Colony Group had its hands full when it took on these two adjacent buildings, but we were up to the task. On the Denver Justice Courthouse, Douglass Colony Group installed architectural sheet metal (stainless and prefinished steel), corrugated metal siding panels, composite panels used as window box covers, ledges and fins, sunscreens/sunshades, commercial Firestone TPO roofing and a Hydrotech waterproofing system with a paver/pedestal system. We also assembled an artistic adaptation for the vent cover on the walk out deck that was comprised of custom cut brushed aluminum sheet metal. Similarly, on the Detention Center, Douglass Colony Group installed architectural sheet metal (stainless and prefinished steel), corrugated metal siding panels, and commercial Firestone TPO roofing. With difficult access points to these two buildings and a tremendous amount of design build during the entire process, the upcoming project completion is a true sense of accomplishment!
St. Anthony’s Hospital
Partnering up with GE Johnson, Douglass Colony Group performed multiple job functions on the St. Anthony’s project. Douglass Colony Group installed composite panels, architectural metal, perforated screenwall panels, standing seam metal roofing, sheet metal, and Firestone TPO roofing. This project certainly presented some challenges along the way such as modified design considerations for the wind uplift (over 100mph wind speeds), city zoning, and a tight construction schedule. Douglass Colony Group also removed the wood blocking at the top of all parapet walls and used a metal cleat (wind clip) in lieu of wood blocking resulting in a tremendous cost savings while still meeting all wind requirements. Icy Dangers Lurking Over Head: Can Snow Build Up and Icicles Affect You This Winter Season?
This winter has consisted of a combination of extremely cold temperatures, heavy snowfalls, and icy conditions that just don’t seem to melt away. These brisk temperatures can certainly adversely affect your roof as well. Frequent freezing and thawing is very harsh on roofing systems and this winter has certainly had its share of both.Luckily, there are recognizable signs to indicate whether your roof may be in need of some repairs or can simply benefits from some regular maintenance. Large icicles and ice dams are the result of when rooftop snow begins to melt and then refreeze. Icicles can certainly be hazardous if dangling in front of an entrance so it’s best to clear those away in a careful manner such as knocking them down with a shovel (be sure to not stand under them when doing so)! One of the best ways to ensure the safety of customers, reduce the chances of icicles and ice dams from forming, and minimize the chance for leaks is to clear the snow from your entire rooftop. The benefits of having professionals safely and effectively removing snow from your roof can really go a long way. Relieving the tension and extra weight on your roof minimizes the effects of winter conditions and ensures the safety of your workers and your clients. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help as a small hole today may result in a big leak down the road.
